Hillcrest Family Home

This Hillcrest family home needed a bathroom update that made daily grooming easier and the wall layout less cluttered. We supplied and fitted a custom LED mirror solution with neat electrical work, measured to suit the room and the family’s routine.

Hillcrest Family Home

A family bathroom that needed better light

The clients were a family in Hillcrest doing a bathroom refresh in a main home that had become awkward to use first thing in the morning. The original mirror area left shadows across the face, the wall looked busy with fittings spread too wide, and the room needed a cleaner finish without turning the bathroom into a construction site for weeks.

The brief was straightforward: give the vanity area brighter task light for shaving, makeup and general grooming, keep the mirror proportion neat to the basin run, and make sure the solution would suit everyday use in a busy household. They also wanted something that looked good in natural light during the day and still worked well during load shedding when the rest of the room was dim.

  • Client type: family home
  • Town: Hillcrest, Durban inland
  • Project focus: grooming light and a cleaner wall layout
  • Room use: main bathroom used daily by adults and children

What made the fit-out tricky

The main challenge was the wall space around the vanity. There were already several bathroom fittings in place and the family did not want more visual clutter. The existing mirror position also sat slightly awkwardly with the basin and tap centreline, so a simple like for like replacement would have left the room looking patchy. We had to measure carefully and plan the mirror size around the vanity rather than force the vanity to suit the mirror.

There was also the matter of moisture and daily steam. Hillcrest homes can get a mix of cooler mornings and warm humid afternoons, so the mirror and electrical components needed to be suited to a room that sees regular condensation. We allowed for proper fixing points, neat cable routing and a finish that would be easier to clean. The family also asked for a setup that would not cast hard shadows on the face which meant getting the light position right first time, not just adding more brightness.

  • Measured on site to suit existing vanity and wall features
  • Planned for steam and daily bathroom moisture
  • Allowed for neat cable routing behind the mirror
  • Chosen to reduce face shadows at the basin

What we supplied and installed

We supplied a custom LED-lit bathroom mirror sized for the room and matched to the vanity width so the wall read as one tidy feature. The mirror used integrated LED lighting with a clean front edge glow and practical light spread for grooming. We also completed the electrical connection so the unit was ready for normal bathroom use, and we checked the mounting so it sat level and secure.

The installation included removal of the old mirror area, fitting the new mirror, tidying the wall presentation and confirming the light function on site. Because the family wanted a neater room, we kept the line work simple and avoided unnecessary add-ons. The final result was a single feature that did the job of both mirror and light source without crowding the basin wall.

  • Custom LED mirror for the vanity wall
  • Integrated task lighting for daily grooming
  • Electrical connection and function test
  • Secure mounting with clean wall alignment
  • Removal of the old mirror setup

Timeline from measure-up to handover

The project ran over two weeks from first measurement to final handover. Week one was used for the site measure, confirming sizes, checking existing power points and agreeing on the final mirror layout. That stage is important because a few millimetres can make the difference between a mirror that looks built in and one that feels off centre.

In week two we completed the supply and installation. The fitting itself was done in a single visit, with final checks on lighting, switch response and wall finish before handover. The family could use the bathroom straight away once everything was tested. We also explained the basic care routine, including how to wipe the mirror without leaving streaks and how to handle any minor condensation after a shower. It was a small job in size but it changed the whole room quite a lot.

  • Week 1: site measurement and layout confirmation
  • Week 2: supply, installation and handover
  • Single install visit once the unit was ready
  • Same day testing of lighting and electrical connection

The result in daily use

The biggest change was the quality of light at the vanity. The family now has a brighter and more even mirror area, which makes morning routines quicker and more comfortable. The room also looks cleaner because the new mirror creates one clear focal point instead of several competing items across the wall. That matters in a family bathroom where the room has to work hard every day.

They also gained a better finish for guests. The mirror gives the bathroom a more polished feel without looking overdone, and the lighting helps the room feel open even on overcast Durban days. During load shedding, the family still gets practical use from the space when there is backup power available, and the mirror remains the main working point in the room. The clients told us the vanity area now feels sorted, not patched together.

  • Brighter face light with fewer shadows
  • Cleaner vanity wall presentation
  • Better daily use for adults and children
  • More polished look for guests

What we would repeat on another Hillcrest project

If we were doing this again for another family home in Hillcrest, we would follow the same process: measure early, keep the layout simple and choose the mirror size around the vanity rather than around the old fittings. That approach saves time and gives a neater end result. It also helps when the bathroom is part of a larger home upgrade and other trades are working nearby.

For family homes, we always recommend keeping the finish practical. A mirror should be easy to clean, properly fixed and placed where the light actually helps the user. In coastal and inland Durban homes alike, moisture and daily use can expose poor workmanship quickly, so a tidy install is worth more than extra decoration. The Hillcrest job worked because the brief was clear and the end result matched how the room is used every day.

  • Measure before making design decisions
  • Keep the wall layout uncluttered
  • Match light output to grooming needs
  • Use a finish that can handle daily steam and cleaning
